In remote Kodiak, Alaska, residents live in one of the harshest climates on earth. Kodiak High School serves the entire island. Requiring a comprehensive renovation and addition, the partnership of DLR Group and Jensen Yorba Lott focused on unifying community vision in the design.
The new, four-story tower addition brings learning from the depths of the school and maximizes daylight. Connections are elevated, from the showcase “Cascading Commons” to the nearby gymnasium, fitness lounge, and library.
Spatial programming is tied to the dispersed delivery of career and technical education (CTE) programs. By pulling these programs from the building recesses and giving them a prominent position in the school, enrollment now includes 70% of the student body. Unique opportunities have arisen that include a partnership with NASA’s Ames Research Center, the European Space Agency, and Intelesense Technologies to set up and monitor two pre-earthquake sensor platforms: the first of their kind in the world.
The design of Kodiak High School includes a four-story, 85,000 SF addition and 104,000 SF of building renovations which were constructed over three years of phased delivery. Embedded in the community, engaged on a global scale, Kodiak High School is proving that “rural” does not limit opportunities.
