The new 176,000-square-foot Rodriguez Middle School is designed for 1,000 sixth through eighth grade students and takes an innovative approach to project-based learning by amplifying freedom of choice through flexible and engaging environments. With the district’s adoption of a project-based learning curriculum, creating scalable learning opportunities through a blend of intimate and collaborative learning spaces was an early design goal. The design elevates the learning environment for the district and allows for pedagogy and curriculum changes which support growth and empower students for future success.
Each grade level is housed in a secure learning neighborhood where classrooms surround collaboration spaces and a multi-zone learning stair. These spaces are used for small group projects, lecture seating or independent study. Interior common spaces include marker walls, corridor benching and age-appropriate colors to create learning opportunities outside the classroom. Interactive spaces between academic wings promote connection across grade levels. Visual and physical connections to the outdoors extends learning beyond the walls of the school.
Rodriguez Middle School is an anchor to the developing suburb, reflecting guiding principles that were established during immersive visioning sessions. The iconic exterior combined with innovative, future-ready learning spaces represent the aspirations of the district and community.
