Godley High School packs a great deal of programmatic elements into a smaller, and highly adaptable, learning environment.
The design responds to a desired sense of community in learning and experience. Shared space is prevalent. An entry plaza provides space for dining and assembly with an outdoor “theater” for community gatherings. The back of the school features three levels of outdoor patios that overlook athletic fields. This approach enhances the community aspect of the facility and creates viewing platforms close to the action.
Inside, the Center for Learning & Innovation (CLI) is the hub of the campus. Library, dining and coffee bar establish a student-union style experience. During lunch, students access a variety of seating in the CLI, spilling onto the learning stair, outdoor patios and surrounding corridors. The CLI includes a stage and adjacent break-out rooms for assembly and instruction.
Academic wings take a similar approach. Typical and atypical classrooms, flexible furniture, movable walls and teacher design labs offer high levels of adaptability. Teachers are encouraged to utilize the entire facility for instruction. Transparency supports this approach, creating passive supervision. Classrooms, labs and athletic spaces feature interior glazing. Walls are minimized in multi-purpose areas, lending to a communal experience.
