A vision inspired by the community, a passion for learning and a focus on trust led to a campus that is agile and exciting. When George Wagner Middle School opened, a change was immediately felt in how peers built relationships, engaged in learning and embraced skill building.
The core of the campus is the commons, a space for meeting, collaborating, performing and dining. It’s anchored by a stage on one end and a learning stair on the other. A second-floor patio overlooks the commons, establishing a unique space for public assembly. An operable wall between the patio and library shifts the space from active to quiet.
The commons are surrounded by “dens” for STEM, humanities and 6th grade. Teachers share classrooms, an approach reinforced by operable walls, flexible furniture, breakaway spaces and teacher design labs within each community. It’s not uncommon to see a quadrant of classrooms open to one another. This creates agility and allows for shifts in curriculum and capacity growth.
Students are trusted to spill out into the commons, library, courtyards and maker space. Four teacher design labs provide sightlines into all areas, supporting trust while enabling students to see the relational aspect of professional learning.
