In 2008, Klein ISD challenged architecture firms to submit a conceptual design for the new school. But national economic turmoil in October 2008 paused the project until 2014 when student enrollment began to increase. Once it was re-initiated, the educational legislation (House Bill 5), significant code revisions, and a focus on transformative learning environments, all had to be managed to fit the accelerated timeline. The exterior was inspired by the district’s request to reflect the Klein community roots and pay homage to the early German settlers through design elements. The interior is inspired by Next Generation learning featuring transparent, transformable instructional spaces. Moveable glass partitions are located at the Learning Hub (library), collaboration areas and throughout the Small Learning Communities (SLC). These glass walls coupled with transom windows in classrooms add up to an open, bright environment throughout the school. “L” shaped classrooms along with the collaborative/flexible areas allow for ‘zoning’ where students can work collaboratively or independently. The school welcomed the students from Lemm Elementary school who were displaced when Harvey destroyed their school. Klein Cain balances Next Gen learning with a respect for its heritage and promises to give every student in the community a purpose.
