Sam Houston State University strongly desired a building that supported campus connections and promoted lasting traditions. Located on a prominent hill, the new Piney Woods Residence Hall creates a south campus gateway that had never existed before and provides amenities for all students in the district.
This highly active and engaging living-learning environment offers students a strong sense of community – a place where they feel connected to the University, comfortable, and eager to live on campus. The building provides high-quality housing for 700 students while encouraging human connections and enhancing the student experience on campus. The dramatic elevation changes on the site create a multi-level, interactive courtyard space, which supports and enhances academic and social interaction among students in the complex
and district.
The residential halls offer two different unit types: single room suites with a bathroom and double room suites sharing a bathroom. Communities of 42 – 45 students share a social lounge, community kitchen, and study rooms. Each floor offers a guest bathroom adjacent to the study rooms. The academic support, student lounge, and study spaces are porous, breaking the boundary between interior and exterior spaces leading to the courtyard.
