LaBella Associates is proud to have designed the new home for Monroe Community College’s downtown campus. Originally a complex of Kodak office buildings, the project included the renovation of seven floors and over 250,000 sf into a dynamic academic campus.
Delivered as a phased approach, infrastructure separation, hazardous materials abatement, and demolition were first completed while the second phase completed envelope improvements and the interior fit out. The program for the campus includes admissions, registration, financial aid, a learning commons, classrooms, faculty offices, event space, and support spaces.
The design provides flexible learning environments, while contending with an existing column grid and floor-to-floor heights which were originally intended for an office environment, with careful consideration for wayfinding and light.
The solution was to create a central campus spine, which provides a central lobby and circulation amongst the first three floors, creating a dynamic public space and a cross-functional social hub. The learning commons combines the library, computer lab and tutoring/collaboration space, indicative of the pedagogy-driven design approach.
The project was awarded LEED Gold certification by incorporating 21,135 sf of green roofs along with the project’s 93% construction waste recycling, 40% reduction of water usage, and use of LED lighting throughout.
