Gateway Community Charters has been serving Sacramento area students since 2003, providing an inspiring education program. Completed in Summer 2018, the Rancho del Paso campus is a neighborhood beacon; the first new school that GCC has constructed, and the largest state funded charter school facility.
Inspired by Gateway’s dedication to educational development and an extensive visioning and planning workshop process, this unique K-12 campus aims to foster the integration of a culturally diverse student population. To encourage connectivity, the design is based on developmental learning, represented by the growth process of a tree; nurtured from a seedling, over time the student gains knowledge while simultaneously growing deeper roots within the new school community.
Upon approaching the campus, each grade level cluster building has a unique identity, while on the campus side, consistent design elements create a cohesive whole to promote sense of belonging.
Appropriate to developmental age, the varying programmatic environments are expressed through scale, color theory, form, materiality, varying building systems and construction methods as integral parts of the learning process. Every year at this school brings with it a new environment, both aesthetically and educationally. These transitions recognize and encourage student growth and change.
