The Science Center at McHenry County College was developed to support the college’s progressive science curriculum while also providing an inspirational and engaging learning environment. The functional need for modernized labs was a primary programmatic focus of the project, however multiple areas for learning to occur outside of the labs and classrooms were also incorporated.
Situated at the top of a ridge, along a stand of pine trees, the building integrates into its natural surroundings through the incorporation of organic building materials and the creation of outdoor learning environments. These outdoor areas include an outcropping of limestone that defines gathering space for students, a stargazing area, an entry plaza that includes a geo-scene wall, and pathways that meander through native landscaping.
A planetarium, defined by a backlit celestial graphic and framed by a zinc enclosure, is cantilevered from the building’s façade as a dynamic expression of the program within. Integrated graphics, displays, and technology related to the sciences, are incorporated throughout the building’s interior to encourage exploration and discovery between classes.
