With state initiatives creating new college pathways, Motlow State Community College’s (MSCC) Smyrna, TN campus has doubled enrollment prompting the development of additional facilities.
TMPartners designed the 35,000 sq ft Science Technology Allied Health (STAH) building to accommodate the growing Nursing and business technology programs, providing much needed teaching spaces, such as classrooms, science laboratories, technology labs and faculty offices. To create a student-friendly atmosphere, the design features significant public spaces to encourage collaboration and study. In addition to the Student Lounge are informal student group study areas, counseling services and “Student Success Center.”
Because this essential building was part of a larger expansion plan, TMP also prepared a phased site master plan before the STAH design began to ensure the property was developed into a more pedestrian friendly campus setting. By keeping parking along the perimeter and screening traffic with landscaping, the campus is set up for future structures on a large central campus green lawn. The use of similar materials ties the STAH building with the existing building and establishes a unifying campus “building language” desired by the administration to be utilized on future buildings.
The STAH building is MSCC’s first step to giving its growing satellite campus its own student-focused campus identity.
