The Nicolet College Lakeside Center is nestled in 280 acres of forest on the shore of Lake Julia in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. Nicolet is the hub of higher education in the Northwoods. Many of its 1,850 students come from the 4,000 square-mile district.
Originally constructed in 1967, the design intent was for the building to blend into the natural surroundings. As the building aged, it became less of a destination for students. The renovation goal was to revitalize the Lakeside Center into a vibrant 21st century destination, while remaining consistent with its rural campus setting. All facets of the infrastructure needed replacement, and exiting and ADA issues had to be addressed.
The first floor was redefined as the social/community building floor. The small, confined student lounge was redesigned. The new lounge, with floor to ceiling glass invites nature into the building.
The outdated library was downsized and relocated to the Mezzanine, resulting in a comfortable place to study in front of the fireplace. The second floor became the Information Commons, featuring multiple study rooms designed for empowering student teams to develop ideas with spontaneity.
The renovated Lakeside Center is now a popular destination for students and community members.
