Sunnyvale ISD has embarked on an educational transformation that requires more of their school buildings than conventional classrooms can provide. This new school is the District's first designed specifically to support the way Sunnyvale students and teachers interact with each other. The campus is divided into three equally-sized learning communities, or houses.
Each house is sized for equal numbers of students from each of the three grades, and includes nine classrooms on two floors, breakout spaces, and small group rooms. The students stay together in the same house all three of their years here. Each of learning community overlooks the school's large central commons area and media center.
Dedicated spaces for art, science, music, and special education also open onto the commons. Other spaces include the large, open, light-filled cafeteria and a gymnasium / tornado shelter.
Covered outdoor learning areas are provided on both levels. With ample interior glass and few corridors, this school presents open visibility with sound separation, enhancing the teaching and learning experience for all. Many of the students have found their favorite spot among the variety of spaces in their new school.
