Mount Vernon Presbyterian School is at the forefront of pushing the boundaries of educational pedagogy, contnually challenging what is accepted as uniform in order for their students to thrive. Considering the school’s forward-thinking pedagogies, the design team worked shoulder to shoulder with MVPS to ensure that each square foot was dedicated to a more holistically collaborative, flexible environment.
Driven by a pedagogy of design thinking, every space is a maker space, no space is ‘owned’ by a single entity and every area offers endless learning possibilities. Structured around the concept of neighborhoods, each unit has a common meeting / studying / learning area (commons) that anchors the learning group.
Programmatic spaces shed their boundaries with the integration of transparent glass garage doors and floor-to-ceiling views into adjacent learning environments, piquing curiosity and fostering collaboration for all. The visibility of these ‘community spaces’ enables passersby to witness students working in a “living” collaborative environment that have resources to encourage an entrepreneurial, creative spirit.
MVPS continues to elevate the way educational institutions are approaching the design of their buildings, and their new Upper School is actively being leveraged to move the needle in educational design.
