As the first K-8 C-STEM school in Arizona, Dove Mountain was built with the future in mind. The district’s vision to provide C-STEM exposure in elementary school and CTE programs in high school influenced the design. Every class and subject integrate computer, science, technology, engineering, and math into the curriculum. Setting a precedent for future school design, it promotes student interaction in flexible learning environments. The main building circulation spine, called “The Arroyo,” sweeps up the sloping terrain connecting the classroom wings, entry, and administration at the south entrance to the cafetorium at the north entrance. The media room, science rooms, and makerspaces are in the heart of the school, accessible to each classroom wing. These rooms can be viewed from the Arroyo, fostering student awareness of their peers’ work. All classrooms are identical in design and natural light, providing equity for students. Each classroom wing is accessible to outdoor learning areas where students can grow, test, present, and celebrate their creations in the amphitheater. Solar arrays located on the covered parking canopies provide for 90% of the building’s energy demand.
