The Columbus Metropolitan Library MLK Branch is the first library in the country named after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Inspired by his words and dedicated by his own grandson, this space connects the Near East Side of Columbus to vital resources, reflects the values of that community, and utilizes innovative concepts to allow those ideas to evolve over time.
The site selection helped re-use an urban site and preserve landscapes. It also took advantage of the local history, existing walkability, bus stops, and adjacency to schools. The challenge was to provide an iconic expression of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that was adaptable over time. Our unique response is a projection system that displays imagery of iconic civil rights moments and inspiring figures to the public. The design is an exploration into the theme of connection and how the library empowers people to come together to facilitate impactful change.
