The new Tidal Hall Life Science Research Building was designed to serve the academic needs of the Texas A&M University Corpus Christi’s Department of Life Sciences.
Located on Ward Island, facing the Corpus Christi Bay, the 112,080 SF, three-story facility visually connects the laboratories with their research source. But the Bay is also the open door to the path of hurricanes, which have impacted the site on several occasions with devastating consequences. In order to protect the research labs from these events, the building is organized in layers that act as protective shields, with lab spaces located at the center and circulation moved to the perimeter.
The building is arranged vertically with all teaching labs on the south end and all research labs on the north end of an East-West primary corridor. This provides for each of the three floors to house 12 open research modules, with 6 on either side of a shared support zone.
The visual character is strongly influenced by the island-based location; Light brick evoking the sandy color of the beach and a glass blue pattern reflecting the ocean’s polychromatic chart fuse together in a building that programmatically finds its source of inspiration in the sea.
