The Emory University Student Center is an innovative 118,000-square-foot facility that serves as the heart of campus, building a community for students, faculty, staff and guests. At the crossroads of multiple University pathways, the Emory Student Center provides inclusive spaces that complement Emory’s academic experience, featuring a combination of meeting and multipurpose rooms, public, semi-public and private spaces. Composed of ‘pavilions on a hill’, the Student Center’s organization and arrangement of multi-story spaces is informed by the intersection of the indoor commons and outdoor spaces. The terra cotta colored roof trellis is a contemporary response to the clay tile roofs of Emory’s Campus and unifies the pavilions while providing shade in the summer to accommodate a growing demand on campus for student-oriented amenities and flexible gathering spaces. With nearly half of the program tucked underground, including the loading docks, the building matches the scale of the surrounding campus, providing exceptional operational efficiencies and enables the creation of an upper green piazza. As the most sustainable building on campus, the Emory Student Center respects and enhances campus aesthetic to stand the test of time and deepen Emory’s sustainability leadership through its use of materials and scale.
