The Texas Southern University Library Learning Center (LLC) was designed to elevate one of the largest HBCUs in the country and its historic Third Ward community by creating an iconic structure that would welcome students, faculty, alumni, and the community into a functional, engaging, well thought out space. Upon entering one of the dual front entrances on the northeast or western sides, you are immediately greeted by the five-story atrium and skylight illuminating a collaborative staircase on the first floor. The LLC combines collaborative spaces, conference and training rooms, a maker space, as well as a Gallery and Special Collections on the second floor. The gallery not only houses TSU’s extremely rare historical documents, cultural art and artifacts, but it also serves as an event space.
The electrochromic glazing integrated into the exterior glazing systems covering approximately 32% of the building envelope allowed for control of glare, heat gain, UV intrusion, and occupant comfort while embracing natural light. The placement of the glazing systems was designed to provide views of the Tiger Walk and its tree canopies from the balconies and striking views from the Board of Regents Conference room of Downtown Houston on the north side
