East Texas Baptist University’s Craig Hall, named after the University’s tenth President, Dr. Robert E. “Jack” Craig (’50), is being restored to provide a new home for the Frank S. Groner School of Professional Studies, the University’s largest school.
Built in 1953, Craig Hall is a two-story brick building featuring Georgian colonial architecture. Though Craig Hall has served ETBU well for over sixty years, University leadership decided to transform its interior into a functional and modern academic space. Under current ETBU President Dr. J. Blair Blackburn, the University launched the CARE for Craig Hall initiative to raise money for the building’s historic renovation.
“Each day with the progress on this building, the vision of the latest learning and training that will take place within its walls for the highest populated academic school on our campus comes to life,” Dr. Blackburn said. “The future athletic trainers, sports leaders, educators, coaches, physical therapists, and occupational therapists earning degrees in the fields of Athletic Training, Kinesiology, and Rehabilitative Science will be equipped through Craig Hall to treat, heal, teach, lead, minister, and disciple others.”
To enhance the overall student environment, the new learning spaces in Craig Hall will be equipped with flatscreen TVs and smart podiums, and cameras will be installed to facilitate online instruction. Classrooms and designated sitting areas will be outfitted with new furniture, LED lighting, and new flooring, including luxury vinyl tile, and new cabinets and quartz in the Athletic Training and Kinesiology rooms. Additionally, a new HVAC system and new windows will be installed in order to upgrade the sustainability of the building and increase energy efficiency.
“These renovations will allow all of the academic departments in the School of Professional Studies to collaborate and teach under one roof,” Dean Dr. Joseph D. Brown shared. “State-of-the-art labs and modern classrooms will allow students to receive the hands-on learning required in Athletic Training and Kinesiology. These much-needed facilities will enhance our already successful and popular programs, and serve as a testament to Dr. Craig’s legacy.”
Dr. Craig holds the honor of being the first and only ETBU graduate to serve the institution as President.
“Our campus is a very fine Christian institution, with a friendly and outstanding faculty and student body,” Dr. Craig said during his tenure as President. “It is the kind of institution our world needs if we are going to make a difference.”
