Wharton Dual Language Academy located in Houston, Texas is home to a PK-8 dual language magnet program. Designed to accommodate 900 students, the project consists of a 3-story addition and renovation totaling more than 110,00 GSF on a 6 acre site. Munoz and Company, along with associate architects AutoArch, were tasked with transforming the existing campus and 90-year-old elementary school building into a 21st century learning environment that would allow room for the program to grow.
Originally built in 1929, the existing building was completely renovated to house the Pre-K and Kindergarten learning centers. The 3-story addition houses grades 1-8 and features a second level gymnasium and light filled 2-story library. Exterior materials including a continuous band of color matched brick and new metal roof help tie the addition to the existing building, creating a cohesive campus look.
The project features a private courtyard, community flex field, learning gardens, and various age appropriate playgrounds. On the interior, bright color-coded corridors and bilingual murals are used throughout to help organize the different spaces. Environmental impact was important to the district and the design team was able to reach a LEED Silver certification.
