The SHOP (SHaping OPportunities at Westerville North High School is a full-featured makerspace inspired heavily by our work with the Columbus Idea Foundry. Based on that experience, we were able to share best practices, industry-standard equipment, and design elements we picked up designing the world's largest makerspace and applied them to a public education setting.
The SHOP is separated into three distinct areas that articulate the design process. The first is a circular nucleus where an idea for a design is sparked. In this space, networked computer workstations were designed including coding classes which are connected to a state-of-the-art projection mapping system. The second being the manufacturing hub, where the ideas come to life through digital manufacturing. This space contains vinyl printers/cutters, 3D printers, CNC routers, and laser cutters. The third area provides a space for students to collaborate, display, and troubleshoot their manufactured ideas. This space also provides low-tech solutions to the production process, including band saws, drill presses, and other typical shop equipment.
Throughout The SHOP bright colors were implemented to accent the playful nature of creatitivity in the creation process.
