School #10 was built in 1916 and is located in the heart of an urban residential neighborhood. Originally the Lewis Morgan School, named after a local attorney who fought for the rights of Native Americans, this school is a source of immense community pride. SEI started the design process by meeting with school staff and local residents to determine how the school could enhance the quality of life within the community. The pedagogy for the entire design was guided by these meetings to (1) create a “sense of place” that excites students to attend school, (2) function as a community center and (3) size and equip classrooms to meet the standards of a 21st learning.
Since the current building had undersized classrooms and six detached modular classrooms (requiring students to go outside), it was determined that a significant addition was needed. Half of the existing building was demolished, and a significant addition was designed to complement the building while still saving the most historically significant portions of the original Morgan School.
The school’s core curriculum is based on collaboration and exploration, and that was the guiding principle for the entire design process, along with enhancing community use and preserving the historic 1916 building.
