The new science building at Gadsden State Community College is a 57,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art teaching facility for biology, chemistry, anatomy and physics. Located on a prominent corner of the community college’s East Broad campus, the new facility serves as a bridge between the more traditionally academic main Wallace Drive campus and the technical and trade-oriented East Broad campus. The new building replaced the 50-year-old Browder Hall, which had space and technology limitations, as well as others related to age.
The new science building was designed to provide students an environment conducive to learning and that promotes the entire educational process. It comprises classrooms for all of the science disciplines, eight laboratories, a faculty office suite, tiered lecture hall for 140 students, computer labs and supporting spaces. The anatomy classroom features a window overlooking a cadaver lab, making GSCC one of the only community colleges in Alabama to offer a cadaver lab.
A number of areas were designed to provide space for students to socialize and study between classes. Reinforced doors and interior window shutters in a number of classrooms and a hallway transform one area of the building into a tornado shelter.
