‘Play’ lies at the forefront of learning. The building is surrounded by a field and outdoor play areas accessible from anywhere in the building.

Maddox is organized like a village. Classrooms functions like rooms, rooms are grouped to form smaller houses, and houses are arranged collectively, as a village.

The building’s form resembles a dragonfly and the plan centers around an interior playground that is the hub of activity and catalyst for connecting families.

Each ‘wing’ has its own multipurpose space and classrooms open directly to outdoor play areas.

The building scale is respectful of its neighborhood and comfortable for its little learners.

Classrooms are daylit and include flexible furnishings for a variety of play.

Moveable and appropriately-scaled furnishings are comfortable for preschoolers.

The common spaces include a maker space, demonstration area, administration, and board/professional development rooms are located along the building’s ‘spine’.

The indoor play space is the heart of the building and makes Maddox truly unique. Classrooms open directly to this space for ease of access.

Because of half-day programs at Maddox, indoor play areas become a hub for parents and children to gather, socialize, connect, build community, and gain resources.

Garage doors open for ventilation and allow access from the indoor play space to outdoor play areas.

Each outdoor playground has its own theme and is geared towards nature play and the use of natural materials.

Logs, stepping-stone pathways and exploratory learning occurs with simple materials found in nature. Covered play space is also included.
