Englewood Schools offers early childhood education throughout the district. The new 37,000-square-foot preschool facility replaces the existing outdated building on the same site. The scale is respectful to the neighborhood of primarily one-story single-family homes and is friendly and inviting.
The building concept is a facility surrounded by opportunities for indoor and outdoor play and embodies a playful character, housing curriculum is rooted in Learning through Play.
In plan, the building resembles a dragonfly, with administration and core functions at the center (‘spine’) and classroom spaces on either side (‘wings’). Upon entering, visitors pass through the Administration suite and enter a central circulation and multipurpose play space. This space is the heart of the building, teeming with activity with access to the maker space, kitchen, professional development spaces, and adjacent classroom wings.
The central play space includes a tricycle track, playground equipment, high ceilings, clerestory windows and doors connecting inside to outside. Classrooms open directly into the multipurpose space and are arranged in pairs. North/south windows promote even daylight for each classroom. Each pair of classrooms accesses its own outdoor playground. The site encompasses four quadrants, creating contained playground spaces with their own unique character and opportunity for play.
