Improvements to the Friendship Learning Center create an expanded, modern learning space that inspires discovery and exploration for early childhood and Pre-K to 5th grade students in the School District of North Fond du Lac.
To accommodate future growth, Bray Architects designed a two-story academic addition for grades 2-5. Each grade level is organized into classroom “pods,” each containing five classrooms arranged around a central resource area. Folding glass doors open the classrooms to the common space, providing opportunity for collaborative teaching and learning.
Challenged with creating a unifying theme throughout the building, the design concept “Learning Lands of Friendship” was developed to serve both a physical and educational function. This theme assigned each grade level a different continent. Wall graphics identify cultural characteristics of each continent, providing teaching and learning content. The corresponding interior color palates act as a means of wayfinding.
A new library, and central “hub” of the school, builds upon the exploration theme, using vertical space to spell out “Story” and “Land.” The school also features a tiered learning stair upon entering and a three-station gymnasium with a walking track.
Extensive renovations to the existing building better support early childhood and Pre-K to 1st grade learners.
