PROJECT NARRARTIVE
Langston Hughes Middle School, located in Reston, Virginia is one of the unique 137,111-SF prototype designs built in the early 1980s. To provide a new identity for the school, the 54,166 SF two-level addition is located at the front of the school. A new bus loop, expanded staff, and visitor parking provide a safe and efficient vehicular traffic flow. The site layout maintained the 'Kiss and Ride' drop-off on the north side of the school.
The design introduces the 'Hall of Nations' as a central circulation spine of the school. The addition accommodates the new administration suite, 2-level classroom/science lab wing, and library. The cafeteria expansion allows additional seating capacity and an outdoor patio. Located in the reconfigured core are the collaboration court, lecture hall, auxiliary gym, and the main gym.
As a CHPS designed school, several elements are incorporated including re-use of the existing building shell, use of regional building materials, upgraded building insulation and thermal materials, new stormwater management, increased daylighting and indoor air quality, exterior solar shading, reduced water use, low emitting construction materials, recycled construction waste, and an outdoor learning courtyard.
