PROJECT NARRARTIVE
Originally opened in 1982 as a state-of-the-art facility, the Olds/Robb Rec/IM facility on the campus of Eastern Michigan University had not received any significant improvements other than routine maintenance since its original construction. Designed by TMP Architecture, the renovated space focuses on physical and social well-being, improving the look, feel, and functionality of the building.
Innovation. The renovated facility allows for innovation to occur easily and spontaneously in a welcoming environment. When the facility was originally built, it was equipped with many racquetball courts with fixed or narrow use opportunities. The renovated facility now embraces a wide range of fitness and wellness programs not easily accommodated prior to the renovation.
21st Century Learning. Along with embracing innovation, the renovated Rec/IM creates an environment that welcomes students. Increased transparency allows people with varying interests and abilities to easily see what is available to them and get to know the facility at their own pace.
Community Needs. The renovated facility provides opportunities for the immediate university community with an outreach to the greater metropolitan area. Core support amenities such as locker rooms have been updated to accommodate patrons with any physical abilities including enhanced privacy to attract a wider audience.
Functional Design. The renovated Rec/IM is vastly more efficient. Corridors were removed, providing transparent and inviting spaces that require less staff to manage and supervise; the design increased usable floor area within the existing footprint. Additionally, the openness creates a bright and safe place to incorporate wellness opportunities for all patrons.
Interior Design. The original building was a great example of 1980s architecture with the generous use of dark brick inside. Much of the interior brick was removed as corridors were eliminated and replaced with lighter colors and materials throughout. Colors and textures were selected to rebrand the wellness programs with a playful but timeless image.
Sustainability. The renovated Rec/IM facility incorporates newer HVAC equipment, LED lighting, and better controls, among other features, but just as important, it is socially sustainable by being inherently inclusive, reaching out to welcome people with a wide range of experiences and world views. The openness and transparency combined with supportive colors and finishes create an environment that improves the student experience and provides a sense of place; a valued destination that is incorporated into the culture of life at the university.
