PROJECT NARRARTIVE
As part of the El Paso ISD 2016 modernization bond program, the Burges High School Campus—originally built in the 1950’s—underwent much-needed renovations and additions. Our team, along with the El Paso Independent School District, re-envisioned its campus as a collection of innovative, physically engaging, and visually connected 21st Century Learning Environments. The design charettes exercises, led by our team, was an opportunity to work side-by-side with the community, teachers, staff, and students, who played a strong role in crafting the priorities and direction for the project. As a result of this process, the importance to keep the historic architectural style, sustainability principles, and a functional space planning design, was conveyed. The new design commemorates the existing Mid-Century Modern aesthetics of the original campus, while building upon them with modern complementary forms and materials.
The learning environment the design team delivered created a secure place of community for teachers and students to gather, collaborate and learn. When you enter Burges High School, the interior elements applied, such as color and finishes, quickly demonstrates that interactive learning, higher level thinking skills and student engagement are broad and all-encompassing.
