PROJECT NARRARTIVE
Having spent the last 75 years as the heart of the community of Petersburg, Texas, it was determined to move into the future with a new K through 12 school. The project had to be designed to fit the current school site while the existing school building remained open during the entire construction period. Programming included academic space for 400 students, gymnasiums, performing arts, cafeteria, community gathering space, administrative offices, and a community tornado shelter. Initial construction of a new vocational agriculture complex was required in order to demolish the existing Vo Ag Building, which was in the footprint of the new K through 12 project. Academic, office, and support spaces were constructed using conventional construction. The gymnasiums were constructed using pre-engineered construction, the Auditorium is within a concrete dome tornado shelter. A “commons” area serves as the dining area and transition space connecting the gymnasiums, auditorium, academic spaces and administrative areas while also serving as a gathering space for the community. The academic area is designed to limit elementary students’ contact with the older aged students. The new school campus opened at the beginning of the 2022 school year thus allowing demolition of the existing school facility.
