PROJECT NARRARTIVE
The Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders is a public college preparatory school for girls grades 6–12 with demographics mirroring the District’s diverse population. Established at a former 1950s-era middle school, the deteriorating facility lacked the ability to support the school’s unique 21st-century learning curriculum.
Incorporating concepts from higher education and modern workspaces, the replacement school is centered around a mission to prepare young women to graduate from college, commit to a healthy lifestyle, lead with courage and compassion, and solve problems creatively and ethically in support of our global community.
Learning and play are integral to the culture and are realized in the design. Classroom neighborhoods provide flexible learning spaces tailored by grade that can adapt to changes in the curriculum and population. Multiple makerspaces support hands-on discovery with technology throughout.
The library is a beautiful intersection of study and fun, incorporating a spiral slide and a learning stair that supports an entire grade for instruction or individual touchdown areas.
The new Ann Richards School design addresses scale, materiality, and massing in a playful yet sophisticated way as it nestles among single family homes, multifamily and office buildings, becoming a beacon of revitalization for the neighborhood.
