PROJECT NARRARTIVE
The Forsyth County Arts and Learning (FoCAL) Center supports the fine arts programs for more than 40 schools and 53,000 students in Forsyth County Schools, one of Georgia's largest school districts. Manley Spangler Smith Architects, P.C., designed the FoCAL Center to accommodate performances that do not fit in the existing school facilities. This two-story performing arts venue is used districtwide by elementary, middle, and high school students for a variety of theatre groups, choirs, orchestras, bands, and more.
The FoCAL Center's 1,800+ seat auditorium includes a balcony, rising orchestra pit, two private viewing rooms, and associated technical production areas. In addition, FoCAL has a 250-seat black box theater, large rehearsal space, full-service commercial kitchen, banquet area for 250 guests, green room, and dressing rooms. Students in visual arts programs throughout the county can display their artwork in the lobby's art gallery.
Sharing the site are the Academies of Creative Education, with a full-time enrollment of 1,200, simultaneously designed by MSSA, and the Forsyth County's Board of Education offices. The master plan unified the site by developing a new drive, which connects tree-lined sidewalks and shared parking. A green space was developed to align the connecting sidewalk with the ACE building and a pedestrian-friendly drop-off plaza designed to naturally slow traffic in front of the FoCAL Center.
The FoCAL Center serves as a central performing arts venue for Forsyth County Schools and provides diverse arts, entertainment, educational, business, and civic opportunities for the 240,000+ residents of Forsyth County and surrounding communities.
