PROJECT NARRARTIVE
The Scarsdale community came together to support this holistic approach to the updating and expansion of the existing Greenacres Elementary School. The debate had gone on for years but was resolved by an intensive process of evaluation and accentuation of the building and site’s potential as a series of dynamic learning environments and community hub.
BBS considered every classroom learning environment for its best role within the essentially “new” facility. The design team mapped out the entire building into learning zones that were then extended outward onto the surrounding property. Every programmatic element was developed as a part of the whole, each complementing the other in order to improve the student learning experience.
Portions of the existing school structure were either removed, fully reconfigured, or renovated in place to achieve the stated goals. A new building addition featuring eight (8) new 800-sf classrooms for 4th and 5th grades and the new Learning Commons and Multipurpose Room, complements the facility while providing needed flexibility, adaptability and thoughtful consideration of space. Students, faculty, and community members are able to explore the new possibilities and celebrate the uniqueness of each student in this welcoming facility and site.
