PROJECT NARRARTIVE
Redbud Elementary, a fitting name for a school designed around the concept of a Magnificent Tree. The seed of this new elementary school was planted from the district’s desire to bring biophilic design elements into the learning environment and introduce students to the importance of our natural world and its connection to their healthy development. The idea was born to imagine how experience could shape learning within a school. The district wanted to re-imagine the experience students have when coming to school and a design that would inspire and bring joy to students.
The school offers a multitude of opportunities for engagement, discovery, creativity, joy, wonder and adventure not just outside the building but within the fabric and structure of the interior spaces students use throughout their entire experience in school. The interior includes widespread use of natural like material, natural colors and textures, organic shapes and forms, various points of prospect and refuge, and the integration of tree-like forms. The school transforms the learning environment, and it emphasizes the importance and benefits of biophilic design and how it can support learning and student wellness in schools.
