PROJECT NARRARTIVE
Banwell Architects was thrilled to team with the Center School to design their brand new school. The design of the new campus embraces the project-based learning model in order to embody its educational values. This new site has provided ample opportunities for the integration of outdoor learning.
The building is a one-story structure with large overhanging curving soffits so outdoor learning can still be done in inclement weather. The exposed structure adds to the open feel of the interior with all ducts and wiring on full display. Strategically placed clerestories in the corridors allow natural light to filter into the corridors and common spaces.
All classrooms have direct access to the outdoors. The "All School" room at the center of the building opens onto a protected southern facing courtyard. Smaller group instruction rooms are placed between classrooms for ideal program adjacencies. This is a unique school that has unique features including: a hidden bookcase door into a "secret room", a building visitor self-serve kitchen just inside the front door, strategically placed energetic colors and a mid-century modern feel to align with the schools outside the box thinking. This innovative school design matches and supports the extraordinary school culture.
