PROJECT NARRARTIVE
The New Movement Middle School on Freedom Drive exemplifies organizations coming together to help communities take root and build on social capital. In this case, The Movement Foundation partners with the non-profit group, Rally Charlotte. Rally seeks to foster greater economic mobility and social equity. And with that in mind, the Movement Middle School includes the new Ophelia Garmon-Brown Community Center including a 1,100+ person gymnasium, community rooms, teaching kitchen, fitness center, with classes for students and programs for the greater community.
Boomerang Design wove the inter-related functions into a facility that could be easily managed, maintained, and expanded in the future. Equally exciting, the facility sits upon a former big-box retail store’s parking lot and bridges neighboring retail, multi-family, food establishments, and a K-5 school. The interiors provide spaces for social interaction and a response to user scale. The color palette is based around timeless neutrals with pops of color and graphics for branding.
Project delivery was through an expedited timeline with design over a five-month period and construction start-to-finish in 9 months. Pre-cast concrete panels were utilized for the exterior walls affording high durability, erection speed, and precision engineering.
