PROJECT NARRARTIVE
Reflecting the generational changes that have occurred throughout this North Las Vegas neighborhood, anchored by the Lincoln Elementary School since 1963, the design for this replacement facility celebrates the rich tapestry of cultural identities of its residents. This site will forever be connected to the nearby Nellis AFB following a tragic F-105 air crash in 1964 in which the pilot sacrificed his life during a crash landing to ensure the plane did not strike the school. The new 98,821 s.f. school was constructed on an existing active campus and integrates vibrant colors to establish a presence in the neighborhood in direct contrast from the otherwise neglected surrounding commercial parcels at the perimeter of this community.
Providing a safe, easily identifiable and vibrant learning environment was of primary concern—yielding a concept that connected to President Lincoln’s influence on the Nevada’s statehood and to offer an elevated, eye-to-eye, experience to students who have yet to visit the Lincoln Memorial. The organization of the building program creates both public and private courtyards that serve as special outdoor learning environments and community spaces. The main entry plaza serves as a community gathering space for events outside of school days.
