PROJECT NARRARTIVE
The over-crowded P.S. 97 sat on an underutilized site in the Gravesend neighborhood of Brooklyn, fronting Stillwell Avenue with a back yard on the parallel residential street. The NYC School Construction Authority hired Ciardullo Architecture & Engineering to design a suitable addition. The positioning of the new wing at the residential street accommodates an entry for early childhood space, a community need. With heavy input from the school staff, the design focused on creating specialized spaces such as pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms, large art and science rooms, an exercise room, and a multi-use greenhouse with adjacent roof garden.
The greenhouse is a unique feature for a New York City public school and was designed in close collaboration with the art and science staff. Environmental control system, irrigation system, weather sensors are only a few of the cutting-edge components allowing students to learn about professions in horticulture, agriculture, botany, and more.
A main lobby at the connection point between the new and existing buildings was created at a former at-grade playroom. This space bridges the two structures visually, structurally, and equitably by enabling accessibility to all building occupants.
