Ludington Area School District was looking to consolidate their three elementary schools and an early childhood center into one new, centralized facility due to aging facilities. This new facility creates a hub for the community, fostering inclusion and encouraging relationship building that promotes a sense of community pride. Recognizing that learning doesn't happen only in the classroom, Ludington Elementary was designed with outdoor learning areas, dedicated extended learning areas, and hallways that function as an accommodated learning space. To help alleviate the large complex feel, the GMB team deployed an innovative design to break down the classroom wings into smaller, grade-level centered neighborhoods. Shared amenities and special programs are organized along a center spine that connects all neighborhoods together. The design is adaptable to support growth for the present and the future. The school was designed not only to serve as a flexible and transitionally appropriate learning space for each age group, but also as a community amenity. Large spaces like the cafeteria and gym can accommodate community events and nestling the facility in the surrounding forest with bike trails, outdoor play areas, disc golf course, and access to restrooms created an opportunity for the community to utilize the property.
