North Star Elementary School was designed by Wold alongside the stakeholders of White Bear Lake Area Schools (WBLAS) to create environments where educators could be empowered coaches of student agency. The communities of WBLAS supported a bond referendum effort to accommodate growing enrollment, enhance safety, and create flexibility and choice in learning spaces, including a new elementary school in the city of Hugo. The building includes areas for civic space (gathering), natural space (learning commons and cafeteria), and home (learning studios) to celebrate the spirit and values of the community of Hugo, which is situated at the junction of urban and rural life. The materials palette of the building is inspired by the beauty of the 130+ acre site, which features a variety of wetlands and reflects the strong tradition of connectivity to water in WBLAS. The learning environments are organized into studios that can be operated to support either grade-level or multi-age pairings, including a variety of spaces to support different groupings and activities throughout the day. Instead of “owning” a room, educators share a professional office and collaboratively determine which space(s) in the studio are conducive to the learning targets and learners’ needs.
