In 2022, Glenview SD 34 in suburban Chicago launched full-day kindergarten programs at its 3 primary schools. In preparation, each school was expanded and transformed to provide a vibrant, age-appropriate learning environment.
FGM Architects (FGMA) designed and built one-story additions at each school tailored to its unique site context. Each school received 8 new classrooms that are appropriately sized and equipped as well as a multipurpose room, toilet facilities and spaces for support services.
FGMA’s design for the new classrooms was informed by a 2018 participatory pilot project in which one classroom was renovated at each school. By testing different options for furniture, flooring, color, and lighting and gathering teacher feedback, designers created optimal early learning environments that support student-centered learning and discovery.
Where possible, each of Glenview SD 34’s kindergarten classrooms have a direct line of sight to outdoor plants and natural views. The corridors are flooded with natural light. Classrooms also feature ample natural light with low benches at the windows and access to outdoor courtyard learning and play areas. The classrooms have zones with the main teaching area identified by a half-circle patterning in the flooring that defines the gathering space.
