In 1926, the original Polk School in Utah was constructed on Ogden city's east bench of the Wasatch Mountains. Nearly 100 years later, the school district wanted to replace the school to accommodate student growth and reduce operation and maintenance costs. The Polk community was enthusiastic that the original historic brick structure not be torn down—they felt the school reflected the city's history and was an anchor in the neighborhood.
Ogden City School district trusted FFKR Architects to design a new Polk Elementary that restored the existing structure with a modern addition. For over a year, we worked with the district, administrators, teachers, and community to design a solution that complemented the existing school and built a bridge to the future of learning. When the bond to pay for the project was voted on by taxpayers, it passed, and construction moved forward.
The original school was disassembled to its primary elements and made structurally sound. The open interior space was then repurposed for administration, teacher break and work room, pre-k, and specialty classrooms such as art, music, science, and maker spaces. The original structure transitions seamlessly to the new academic addition with a full-height glass lobby, office, and secure vestibule. The three-story academic wing runs north to south with flexible learning suites that capture natural daylight, promote public practice through visible transparency, and address safety concerns with their ability to be isolated from the rest of the facility. The interior palette is gradients of purples, blues, and greens layered with custom murals and textural materials like concrete block, natural maple, ceramic tile, painted pressed fiber panels, perforated steel, and dichroic glass. Academic spaces were designed to be adaptable with moveable furniture to transition between instruction and collaborative or peer-to-peer learning environments easily.
Combing complimentary modern pieces, materials, and designs to the original aesthetic of the 1926 school building resulted in an unexpectedly elegant and sophisticated interior for an elementary school. The outcome is a beautiful example of preserving history and adapting for the future. The school opened with a warm welcome and praise from the community and administrators.
