This project represents one component of a larger bond project. The challenges included the creation of a new fitness center on a small, irregular piece of property that could also be used as an interdisciplinary learning space, located at the main entrance of this high performing high school. The district wanted to craft a new identity in its architecture and learning spaces that could serve as a reference and inspiration for future spatial and infrastructure projects moving forward.
The design team met with building administration, teachers, students, and an actively engaged Board of Education to develop this project. Students wanted to be sure they felt safe and affected the massing and opacity of the addition as it faces the main entry plaza to the school. The more open and transparent section of the space faces away towards a more private wooded area atop a hill overlooking athletic facilities below, complemented by an adjacent outdoor learning area.
The project fosters a sense of pride and unique ownership for students and the community at large. New materials, textures, colors, and an actively dynamic sense of design enhance the intentions of creating an inspirational and aspirational space for students to actively thrive.
