The Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine represents a fundamental change in the way people work, while extending the boundaries of modern medical education. The three pillars of holistic health – mind, body, and spirit – are fundamental to the building design, expressed beautifully through the college’s openness, infusion of light, and focus on wellness that encourages more physical activity.
DesignGroup organized the building around a central atrium that fills the interior with natural light. Stairways connect the atrium to academic areas, encouraging movement, and a fitness room provides further opportunity for physical wellness. Yoga studios, mindfulness rooms, and other spaces enhance mental and emotional health. Flexible spaces throughout the building support the college’s new curriculum and anticipate emerging learning technologies.
This project is seeking to be the first Medical Education project in the nation to get WELL Certification. Like Osteopathic medicine, the design team took a holistic approach to this project. By exploring words + imagery + materials together, they found a common language and built a consensus that informed the material palette and set the emotional tone of the building. The program and design were completed in close collaboration with global firm Perkins&Will.
