Every floor is a stage, every wall is a gallery. Located across from Fenway Park, the new 5- story school engages the street edge by bringing visibility to the forefront of the urban experience. The new Academy offers students a world-class auditorium and black box theater, recital hall, and supporting academic spaces to explore their creative potential. The Academy is a full-inclusion public school founded in 1998 on the conviction that both academics and the arts are equally important to student development and achievement, and that all students deserve access to an arts education.
The design team collaborated with stakeholders from the school community, the Fenway neighborhood, and the City of Boston to define priorities to benefit the greater community, 21st Century STEAM education, health and wellness, and teaching and learning beyond the classroom. The design features several dispersed glass “beacons”, representing each of the art, science, and performance disciplines. The auditorium celebrates the technical components of theater production by intentionally displaying the cables, controls, lighting, and catwalks, including an accessible catwalk at an interstitial floor level that provides direct access to both the auditorium and black box theater control rooms.
