Wilson/WSTEM Elementary School underwent a complete renovation and addition modeled after the district’s prototype elementary school developed previously by PRA. Along with the historic 4K-5 elementary, the building also houses the robust Wauwatosa STEM (WSTEM) program. Through collaboration with the neighborhood, it was decided the historic façade would be maintained while a new wing was added, and the interior was completely renovated.
Foot traffic is directed along carefully placed sidewalks connecting a local trail to the front entry plaza. The baseball field and inclusive playground arc along this connector. Each site element was carefully considered to minimize impact on the neighborhood while addressing the safety and functional needs of a modern school within a limited site area.
The new entry is tucked back into the neighborhood and opens into the commons. Natural light pours in from the above skylights and a central stair leads to the open LMC and adjacent Discovery Lab. Branching off these core spaces are the classroom wings, which organize groupings of three classrooms around open collaboration areas. Sliding glass doors provide transparency and connection between classrooms and shared spaces.
