In the Shawnee Mission School District, the growth of advanced/technical studies programs left students operating in outdated spaces and only in specific schools, limiting potential. Administrative needs were also significant, with staff spread among five buildings. District officials needed to address those issues — and saw an opportunity to forge a stronger connection with the community. ACI Boland Architects came on board to design a new, transformative solution.
The Center for Academic Achievement intertwines spaces for education, administration and community in one building — an innovative approach that creates a unique learning environment and strengthens connections between three distinct but interrelated groups. The flexible, integrated layout encourages beneficial, organic interactions that broaden perspectives and create learning opportunities.
The facility provides exceptional support for 21st-century learning, with tailored spaces for signature programs — including biotechnology, medical health science and animation — that provide real-world opportunities for students to build their future. A third of the building serves community needs, with flexible meeting spaces available for community use and walking paths next to a golf course and park.
Through functional design, administrative square footage was reduced from 500,000 across five buildings to just 131,000. Administrators — now under one roof — share goals and ideas more effectively, increasing organizational efficiency and building a collaborative culture. Signature programs are now available to all district high schoolers, and students in various programs can collaborate in new and valuable ways.
Sustainability and interior design elements work hand-in-hand. Designed to LEED Silver Standards, the facility features natural daylighting, recycled/recyclable materials and a two-story living wall that provides for cleaner air and added beauty. Materials were chosen for durability, sustainability, efficiency and visual appeal. The center also provides a healthful working environment, with a health clinic, wellness center, walking trails and underfloor air distribution.
The intertwining of spaces for education, administration and community in one building is a transformational approach that’s unprecedented in the educational space. Administrators connect more directly with the kids they work every day to support, providing inspiration and perspective. Students gain experience within a professional business environment, readying them more effectively for life beyond school. Community members get a new perspective on the ingenuity of students and the commitment of administrators and educators.
This innovative approach to the learning environment strengthened connections between educational stakeholders while achieving significant space savings and operational efficiency.
