As described by Dr. Jeffry Henderson, CGHS Principal, “The remodel of the former natatorium provided us with a wonderful opportunity to repurpose an old, outdated space into a state of the art 2-story art complex with more space, better storage, and updated technology. It also allowed us the opportunity to incorporate a gallery and exhibition space to be able to showcase the artistic talents of our students in a public and professional way. Something that has been sadly lacking in most public high schools for far too long. This design brought our facility up to the level of professionalism displayed by our teachers and provides students with an attractive space where their talents can be on display. The level of pride that the teachers and students have in their new area is evident when you talk to any of them.” Specific features of this project included opening up some exterior walls for additional curtainwall glazing, inserting a second floor with various art studios, and capturing a 2-story exhibition area surrounded by a gathering balcony and art display areas. The chosen finishes are intentionally clean and simple, with focused lighting highlighting student work as well as reflecting off exposed structure.
