Built on an existing school site, this addition and renovation project replaces a 1960s-era school that restricted teachers’ and students’ ability to collaborate. The new school now fits the curriculum, offering a bright, inviting environment focused on connection.
The design supports and enhances the school’s interdisciplinary team model approach to teaching and learning. Each team now has its own self-contained pod offering space for science, math, social studies, and language arts instruction; specialized spaces for small group learning, special education interventions, and extended learning; and direct access to student restrooms and a shared teacher workroom. To celebrate the school's culture, each team’s color was integrated within their pod, offering a playful yet warm and calming palette.
The design takes advantage of the sloped site to deliver contextual scale at the entry and a two-story, daylit media center with an integrated makerspace to support STEM curriculum. Generous circulation paths enable teams to circulate without disrupting others. The new dining space with a presentation platform delivers a multifunctional space for student presentations and community events. To maximize the use of available resources, the design incorporated two existing gyms and transformed the existing student dining into an inspiring music suite.
