Elizabeth Holladay (Holladay) Elementary School is tucked away in a residential neighborhood with a growing Spanish speaking population.
Holladay Elementary Schools serves as the welcome center for new students in the Brookland district that are enrolling in the Dual Language Immersion Program (DLI). In addition to this specialty program, the school enrolls students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Moseley Architects was challenged with developing a flexible design that could accommodate any grade structure and specialty program that may be needed in the future. The solution was to design the classrooms similar to a kindergarten room with additional square footage and a bathroom.
The learning stair is the heart of the educational community and serves as a gathering area for students, teachers, and staff. It also connects the common spaces to the second-floor academic wings. Large groups of students can gather here for presentations and fun performances.
The media center serves as the gateway to the academic wings. It is the hub of the school and students can move freely through this flexible space. In addition to traditional media center functions, the space offers collaborative and flexible areas. The tiered seating supports small group presentations and story time.
