The Argo Community High School District 217 Richard and Sharon Portillo Performing Arts Center Addition includes a 450-seat auditorium, stage, prop construction area, Band, Choral and Theater Classrooms, Practice Rooms, Lobby, Mezzanine Student Commons area and related support spaces.
The 37,000 square foot building houses a 450 seat Auditorium. A primary goal of this project was to create a performance space that works as a learning space. There are Band, Choral and Theater Classrooms. Teachers will develop activities to help students process information. Students will have opportunities to use music to tell stories. The prop construction area gives students hands-on experience in all aspects of stage production. Learning in the Practice Rooms is on display, with views from the Lobby and Mezzanine Student Commons.
The Addition matches the architectural style of the existing 100-year-old high school. Therefore, exterior materials such as brick and stone were chosen for their durability, maintenance and aesthetic. The proportions and scale of the addition’s windows and the use of brick and cast stone architectural elements, such as the arches over the entry windows, and masonry pilasters, reflect that of the original high school.
